Privacy Policy
Last updated: 4 November 2026
PetrolSpot is a crowd-sourced fuel price app for Aotearoa New Zealand. This policy explains what we collect on this website and in the app, why we collect it, and what you can do about it. We follow the New Zealand Privacy Act 2020.
On this website
When you join the waitlist we collect:
- Your email address, so we can invite you when PetrolSpot reaches your area.
- Your suburb or town, so we can open PetrolSpot region by region.
- Your answers to the optional question about what fuel apps get wrong, if you choose to give them.
We don’t use advertising or tracking cookies on this website.
In the app
- Your account. You sign in with an email code, Google or Apple. We keep your display name, when you joined and a sign-in identifier from our login provider.
- What you contribute. Prices you report, prices you confirm, problems you report, and the points and trust title they earn. Your display name appears next to your contributions.
- Your location. Used on your phone to show nearby stations and distances. When you update, confirm or report a price, your location is checked against the station to make sure you’re within 1 km. We don’t keep a history of where you’ve been.
- Favourites and alerts. The stations you save and your price-drop alert settings.
- Notifications. If you allow notifications, we store a push token so we can send them. You can turn them off at any time.
- If you delete your account and choose to tell us why, we keep your answer without anything that identifies you.
Who processes your data
We use a few services to run PetrolSpot. They process data on our behalf and only for that purpose:
- Convex: our database and backend.
- Clerk: sign-in and accounts.
- Google Maps: maps and place search in the app.
- Expo: delivering push notifications.
- Vercel: hosting this website.
Some of these services store data outside New Zealand.
How long we keep it
We keep waitlist details until PetrolSpot launches in your area, or until you ask us to remove them. We keep account data while your account exists. Price reports stay as part of a station’s price history, but are no longer linked to you once your account is deleted.
Your choices
You can ask to see, correct or delete your information at any time. To delete your account, see Delete your account. For anything else, email hello@petrolspot.co.nz.
If you’re not happy with how we’ve handled your information, you can complain to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner.
Changes
If we change this policy, we’ll update the date at the top of this page. If the change is significant, we’ll also tell you in the app.
